Review & Excerpt: Captive's Kiss (Watcher's Kiss #3) by Sharon Kay

Kumiko Lei     4 Stars, Captive's Kiss, Excerpt, Review, Sharon Kay, Watcher's Kiss     No comments

*can be read as a stand-alone
*previously published in the Gathering Darkness boxed set

It was only supposed to be one hookup. One hot night to ease the mating urge of his race’s fertile period.

But after scorching, up-against-the-wall sex in a darkened club, Tanner can’t get Saige out of his mind. And when he spots her the next day, in league with an enemy, he’s determined to uncover more about her than her delectable curves.

Saige knows Tanner is one of the good guys. And that’s why she can never see him again.

Her life has crumbled into a horrific turmoil, forced to aid criminals in kidnapping men for bloody arena fights. Held against her will, she has no hope of escape from her captors.

Determination rages through Tanner until he tracks Saige down. But rescuing her from her jailers’ sadistic whims means entering her underground hell. Posing as her victim and locked in a cell, he must find a way to save them both before he is pushed into a fight to the death.

Captive's Kiss starts out with a bang.  It's a steamy, sexy, "wow" kind of bang.  It's pretty awesome.

Although this is #3 in the series (which I didn't realize when I read it, cause I haven't read #2 -- oops), I didn't feel lost or as though I missed anything.  It kept my attention from the beginning and didn't let up.  It was a one sitting read.

All in all, Captive's Kiss was a quick, steamy, action packed read. Just what I needed for a little escape on a Sunday afternoon.

And now... since I know I missed a book -- Off to go get Book 2!

Oh... and keep scrolling down... there's an excerpt!

Saige threw back the shot, savoring the burn as it flowed down her throat. If she didn’t grab that male, there were dozens of others to choose from. Her captors preferred the most dangerous predatory species. They liked Deserati demons, but they also loved Lash demons, and she was certain she’d seen a group of Watchers walk in.

She glanced around, not spotting them at the moment. Probably already in rooms with females. Dudes as big as that had ladies hanging off them like vines at this time of year. She looked to the dance floor, which was just a packed mass of bodies. It was hard to tell where one creature ended and the next one began.

Her skin tingled, responding to the groping and kissing all around her. She needed to get relief, then she could do what she needed to.

She set down the glass and squared her shoulders, ready to sidle into the mass…and found her way blocked by a solid wall of muscle and a scent that almost brought her to her knees.

Smoke and a hint of dark spice clung to him. Well over six feet tall, he had short dark hair and green eyes that already gleamed with lust as he perused her from heels to hair. His eyes locked with hers, and she froze under the weight of his stare. Need, power, danger. And interest.

“Your name?” His deep voice rumbled around her, through her. His full lower lip looked bitable and her pulse quickened. He was a Lash, her species, and he was in the same hormonal boat she was. She could tell, even though she couldn’t resist a quick peek at the bulge behind his zipper.

“Saige.” She took in his enormous biceps and shoulders and inhaled once again. He was intoxicating, dreamy, sexy, and hot as hell.

A group of males pushed to the bar behind her, jostling her, and the Lash’s arms went around her shoulders, tucking her close. Her breath hitched at the sensation of being pressed against that wide chest, and she took another greedy inhale. She rubbed her cheek on the soft black cotton of his T-shirt.

“I’m Tanner,” he said, and she felt the words vibrate from his body the same way she heard them in her ears. “Let’s go somewhere quieter.”

“Gods, yes,” she murmured, and let him lead her around the bar to the dark area of private rooms in back.

His hand gripped her hip and he allowed zero space between them as he pushed through the crowd. His fingers felt magical, each tip a spark to her need. Gods, she was so overdue for this. She’d waited too long. She might orgasm just from him touching her over her clothes.

Oh, who was she kidding, she didn’t care how it happened. It just needed to happen in the next minute or she’d combust.

Tanner. She said his name in her mind, letting the syllables roll around. So sexy and strong. She felt something hard concealed at the side of his thigh. A blade. He had to be a Watcher.

The elite warriors were the self-appointed peace enforcers of the realms. They were honorable, but could be merciless to species who took unfair advantage of less fortunate ones. They were the good guys, the white knights…but their sex drives were just as insane as everyone else’s right now. She slid a hand around his waist, dragging it slowly down his muscular ass.

He growled and shoved open a door that had been left ajar by a fae couple who’d just left. In one fluid move, he kicked the door shut and pinned her against the wall.

“You want this, Saige?” His hands circled her biceps and slid down to her wrists, leaving a trail of goose bumps. “You want me?”

“Yes. Now.” She captured one of his big hands and brought it to her lips, sucking his first finger into her mouth.

His eyes glowed bright green and he gritted his teeth. “Fuck, woman.” His free hand went to the center zipper of her corset—who the hell had time for hooks and laces—and pulled it down.

Review: Divine Ecstasy (The Guardians Of The Realms #8) by Setta Jay

Kumiko Lei     4 Stars, Divine Ecstasy, Guardians Of The Realms, Review, Setta Jay     No comments

 photo DivineEcstasyReview_zpsovtqqzbr.jpg

The slave of demented Gods, Sacha knew only a life of anguish and suffering until she was reborn as a Guardian of the Realms. Gifted with immense strength and rare abilities, she has spent thousands of years battling to protect the four Realms with her Guardian family. Time has allowed her to construct the perfect mask of calm and control so none can see the past shame and immense pain buried in the darkest recesses of her mind. Now, an encounter with a new and powerful enemy has left Sacha the victim of a poison induced coma that all are unable to heal. The last thing anyone imagines waking her is a God with the strength and potential to unravel her entire world.

As the most powerful of the Gods, Hades was awakened from the Creators’ enforced sleep to help the Guardians in their quest to find his heinous brother, Apollo. After a brutal battle with an unknown Goddess leaves him in need of healing he finds himself powerfully drawn into the room of a sleeping seductress. Her soul calls to him relentlessly, but if he surrenders himself to that connection and gives her the strength to heal, life as he knows it will end.

With their worlds unraveling and new threats at every turn will Sacha’s past destroy them? Or will she bring a God to his knees and lead them both into Divine Ecstasy.

Warning: Sexually explicit content, dirty language and Gods behaving badly.

Okay, so first off, this is a long overdue review... Much like all of my reviews lately.  So, my apologies to Setta Jay. You, Setta Jay, creator of MY dragon and this awesome Guardian world... You write books faster than I write my reviews and I am in awe!

Divine Ecstasy.  So, it's Book 8 in the series.  Honestly, if you're 8 books in and you're still reading, you're going like this one, you may not "love" it, but it's a necessary read for the ongoing series arc.

"Like vs. Love" -- See, Divine Ecstasy had a different feel to it than the rest of the series.  Don't get me wrong, there was a reason for it and it's understandable with the circumstances... but I was expecting more Frenzy, more sexual tension, more of what the other books had that I can't quite put my finger on or name.  Sporadically throughout the book, I would get a feeling like the Frenzy was picking up, but it was fleeting and left me wanting... Wanting P's book, that is.  I mean for realz, the ending was just like... whaaaaat!?!

I don't want to down on this book, because shit, I gave it 4 stars, and it was good.  It just wasn't like the rest of the series.  It's has a slower pace and a subdued Frenzy... but it does have a pretty sweet (i.e. dirty as fuck) scene in it, that I absolutely loved and squeed about.

All in all, if you're invested in this series, you're going to read this, just know going in that is a slower pace and a little more subdued due to certain circumstances (am I being vague or what?).  If you have doubts about reading it, do it anyway, if only for that sweet-ass dirty as fuck scene.

Review: The One by Danielle Allen

Kumiko Lei     5 Stars, Danielle Allen, Review, The One     No comments

The cattiness.
The fights.
The shaming.

I don't generally watch reality television, but I definitely don't watch reality dating shows. Besides the fact that it's completely staged, it's a horrible depiction of people -- women especially.

Women are pitted against each other to compete for the affection of a man they "fall in love" with after a week or two.
I call B.S.
It is complete crap.

So when my best friend, Koko, was hired as a makeup artist o the set of the most popular reality dating show, The One, I teased her mercilessly.
She told me that if I didn't stop teasing her, she would get me back.
And she did...
Which is how I ended up as a contestant on The One.

The One was an amazing book. It drew me in from the start. Even though I don't watch reality TV, I was sucked in and hooked.

This was read in one sitting, on a Saturday, in my bed. I DID NOT MOVE.

A swoon-worthy hero, a strong-minded heroine, and a variety of side characters that will make you want to laugh, scream, and probably throat-punch at least one of them.
Oh... and there's a super steamy scene that will make a non-smoker want a cigarette!
For real, I needed a cigarette AND a nap.

Along with writing a great love story, Danielle knows how to weave in important social issues without making the whole book about those issues.

I can't say enough about The One. Whether you love or hate reality TV, this appeals to all. Definitely a Must Read.

How To Be A Book Whore When You're Broke As F*ck

Kumiko Lei     Book Whore, Ebook Piracy Sucks Balls, Free Ebooks, How To, Kindle, Kobo, Swagbucks     No comments

Piracy is bad, man.  BAD.  Mmmkay.
I don't need to point out how much of a problem it is, or how wrong it is, or how damaging it is to the authors you're stealing from.  I think we all pretty much know this.

And the excuse of reading pirated copies because you're broke as fuck is getting old.  Because it's a lame excuse.  And in 2016, unless you've been living under a rock, you already know it's wrong.

If you can google search for that pirated copy, you sure as hell can google search how to get it legally.  Just sayin'.

This is not about how to pirate a book.  This is about how to get your grubby little book whore paws on books the legal way, the way that still may put a little bit of money in an author's pocket, so they can keep paying their bills and writing more books.

Okay, so I'll just start this off with a couple of confessions. (Anyone else hear Usher in the background?  Just me, okay.)

1.  I am a book whore.  It's undeniable.  E-books, Paperbacks, sometimes the same book more than once.  I need ALL the covers, ALL the formats, ALL THE BOOKS.

2.  I am broke as fuck!  Literally.  I have a husband, 3 kids ranging 10 - 15 years old.  I have a mortgage and loads of bills.  Crappy health insurance with a high-ass deductible.  This adult life shit ain't cheap!

So, before you tell me that if I didn't spend money on books, I wouldn't be broke... let me say, I don't spend my paycheck or my husband's on books.  Sometimes I'm smart and resourceful.  It's rare, but it does happen every now and again.

I'm gonna tell you how I manage.  Not that this is the only way to do it, but it's how I do it, and it works for me.

*If you're new to the book game, make sure you have your e-reading apps.  The two I use the most are the Kindle App and the Kobo App.  (Yes, my links are affiliate links, I need money for books, yo!)

Alright, let's do this.

Start with the freebies.

There are mailing lists you can sign up for, they'll send you daily lists of freebies to grab.  My favorite is One Hundred Free Books.  I used to use this one ALL THE TIME, it's part of the reason why I have over 5000 e-books waiting to be read.  (I told you I was a book whore).  You will find plenty to read, at no cost to yourself.  Download them ALL or be picky.  Up to you.

Another source for freebies, just go here:
Amazon's Top 100 Free Kindle Books

It's Top 100 Free across ALL genres, if you want to get specific, on the left side, click on the genre you're looking for.  And you can get really specific in the subgenres if you want.  You're kindle will not be lacking for long.

Oh, you want a book that costs actual dollars, but you have NO DOLLARS.

I have 1 word for you --- SWAGBUCKS --- SIGN UP HERE (of course, it's my referral link, I need money for books, did you forget?)

If you don't know how this works, let me explain a little, it has a search engine that randomly rewards you with "swagbucks" when you use it.  You can also do all sorts of activities to earn swagbucks: complete surveys, watch short videos, sign up for things (I don't sign up for things, but you could).  They also have "swagcodes" that pop up randomly during the day, if you enter them in the box within the time frame, yippee, you got more!  They also partner with a lot of online stores, so you earn cashback when you buy, in the form of swagbucks of course.

So, what can you do with swagbucks? Well, you can trade them in on gift cards -- AMAZON gift cards.  Currently, 100 swagbucks = 1.00 Amazon Gift Card.  Not a lot, but it will add up.  Especially if you do your purchases to online stores through swagbucks, that's where you really earn.  There are other gift cards you can get, but for book whore purposes, Amazon is the go-to.

So, why do I have the Kobo app if all I've talked about is Amazon?

Well, Kobo has some awesome discount codes, so if you do have a little bit of cash and the books you want are available there, go through the swagbucks cash back, use one of Kobo's discount codes, get your books cheap and earn your swagbucks. (You earn swagbucks on the total before the discount -- so it's a definite win.)

Giveaways

There are always giveaways you can enter.  E-books, signed paperbacks, gift cards, kindles, swag.  It's an endless litany of things to win.  Follow some blogs on Facebook, follow some of your favorite authors on Facebook.  Check out the Goodreads giveaways.

And a side note about giveaways that I did NOT know when I first started hoarding books. When you win an ebook in a giveaway, the author is expecting you to review it.  I suppose you don't necessarily have to, but it would be nice if you did.  Just a sentence or two is fine.

And there's always the blogger/reviewer route.

If you're a blogger, you already know.  ARCs from authors, review copies from places like Netgalley, Edelweiss and Novel Reviewers.  If you're not familiar with these, please, don't just sign up for free ARCs, do it the right way, these are here for you to READ & REVIEW.

Now, Go Forth and Be The Book Whore You Were Born To Be.

Have a question?  Have your own method to soothing your inner book whore?  Drop me a comment, tell me all about it.

Please, let's not talk about how to pirate books.  I don't support piracy, and honestly, it's like banging a stranger in a McDonald's bathroom without a condom.  Don't give your computer an STD.
