Falling Stars by JL Brooks Review

Sarah      Falling Stars, JL Brooks, Review     No comments

falling stars full cover

It had all the makings of a perfect plot, and for bestselling author Lila Keaton-it was a hedonistic past she kept hidden far away. Many nights were spent crossing the velvet rope, dancing until dawn and bedding one of the worlds biggest DJ’s, Hunter Michaels AKA Arial Assault. When Lila’s agent uncovers her thrilling secret, it appears as if nothing is off limits when it comes to pitching the story, whether Lila wants to tell it or not. Despite knowing her reluctance is career suicide, she cannot bring herself to open her heart once more to the man who nearly destroyed it. Given the opportunity to escape her predicament, Hunter attempts to reconcile the pain he has caused, and rekindle the passion that was abandoned long ago. When a series of events causes history to repeat itself, Lila sets off unaccompanied through out the west to test her boundaries with the sensual and surreal, and ultimately come face to face with the only thing that can keep her from falling.

He was sitting in a roped off area of an elegant night club and I was standing at the edge unable to reach him. From across the space he stared venomously in my direction for daring to intrude on his territory. Grasping for the pass around my neck, I remembered that I gave it to his girlfriend, the one who was down on her knees, sucking his cock for everyone to see. When she turned around, she smiled and thick black liquid seeped from the corners of her mouth and down her chin. Hunter's hand stroked the top of her head as if she were a beloved dog. Then again, to men like him, that is how women were supposed to act, like good little bitches.

Reading the Prologue tends to draw the reader in.  I read the prologue and said what the heck is that all about?  But the prologue was a story written by the main character who is an author.  I was confused throughout the story and felt like I didn’t understand something.  Something just didn’t make sense.  Then I reread the prologue and realized I missed part of understanding what the whole story was about.  The first part of the prologue was very similar to the journey Lila Keaton was about to face.  Her heart and soul was part of “The Little Traveler.”

Lila Keaton is a bestselling author who writes romance/erotica novels.  Can the author live through her descriptive scenarios or is she purely visual?  She is sleeping with Arial Assault DJ, Hunter Michaels.  I tried to open up my heart to Hunter and have sympathy for him, but he kept tearing at my heartstrings.

I was intrigued throughout the story, but I thought a lot of the romance scenes seemed unrealistic.  Yes, everyone would like to have that much sex, but it doesn’t happen.  Hunter’s loving knows no bounds.
Lila’s agent Dinah is ready to throw out the next pitch for Lila whether she is okay with it or not.  Lila knows that by not sharing her story, she may as well turn in her resignation.  She cannot lay herself bare again to the man, the one person, who she has built up walls against.

Hunter tries to work things out with Lila, but is it enough to bring them back together or will history repeat itself and Hunter’s unforgiving ways shine through?  Lila seeks out a journey alone not knowing what she is doing or where she is going.

Just when I thought there was someone to save Lila from herself, I was wrong.  I never expected anything that happened at any point in this story.  Every time I thought Lila was getting her life together or on a steady road, BAM!  She would get smacked in the face with something new.  I am very curious to see what is to come of book #2 in this series, because this is definitely not a standalone, one and done.  This book will leave you thinking “What just happened? Let me reread the last few pages to see what I missed.”  You will definitely be lured to book #2.  I can’t wait to see what JL Brooks has in store for us.
